The Powder Magazine is a reconstruction of an engineering structure that once stood on the grounds of the Verkhoturye Kremlin. In the 17th century a wooden powder ("zeleyny") magazine was guarded by streltsy and Cossacks; the treasury was sometimes kept there. Later a stone magazine was built, adapting the ideas of the French fortification engineer Marshal Vauban to the Ural region. Powder was stored there in wooden barrels in substantial quantities, and there were cannons and mortars. The stone magazine served as a storage facility until the 19th century. Visitors to the exhibition can enter the stone magazine and learn about the history of the Verkhoturye garrison and the weaponry of the 17th–18th centuries.
