Exhibition of the Omsk State Literary Museum named after F. M. Dostoevsky

About exhibition

The F. M. Dostoevsky Literary Museum is located in one of Omsk’s oldest buildings, constructed in 1799 for the commandants of the Omsk fortress. In July 1859 the writer F. M. Dostoevsky stayed in this house as a guest of the last commandant, A. F. de Grave. The central part of the museum's exhibition is devoted to his life and work, and above all to the Omsk period (1850–1854). Convicted for his participation in the democratic Petrashevsky Circle, Dostoevsky spent four years in the Omsk penal prison. What was the Omsk penal prison like? What did prisoners’ clothing look like? What were the shackles that Dostoevsky did not remove for four years? What was the "Siberian Notebook" like before it began to be printed in collected editions of his works? Visitors to the museum can learn about these and many other episodes from the writer’s biography. The museum is also dedicated to the history of Siberian literature and its notable representatives. The city is associated with the names of writers known far beyond its borders, including: F. A. Berezovsky, A. S. Sorokin, L. N. Martynov, P. N. Vasiliev, G. A. Vyatkin, R. I. Rozhdestvensky, T. M. Belozerov, A. P. Kutilov, and many others. The exhibition includes three temporary shows located in the first, second, and lecture halls.
