A rock landscape park of rare beauty from the 18th–19th centuries is located on the grounds of a former private estate whose owners for 150 years were the von Nicolai barons, who served Russia in the fields of education and diplomacy. The landscape of Tverdysh Island, where the museum-reserve is situated, is unique. According to geologists, the island's cliffs are massive granite outcrops exposed at the surface, and their picturesque and unusual relief, which has given rise to many theories and fantastic legends, was formed by glacial activity and subsequent post-glacial earthquakes. It was in this remarkable place that Mon Repos Park was created, immediately becoming famed as one of the most beautiful parks in Europe.
