Exhibition of the Pavel and Sergey Tretyakov Museum
About exhibition
The Museum of Pavel and Sergey Tretyakov is a new museum space within the State Tretyakov Gallery. The museum is dedicated to the lives of the Moscow collectors Pavel Mikhailovich and Sergey Mikhailovich, their contributions to collecting and philanthropy, the Tretyakov family and its close ties to Moscow, the significance of their activities for Russia, and the history of the Tretyakov Gallery they founded against the background of 19th-century art collecting. The museum is located in the house where Pavel and Sergey Tretyakov—the founders of the Tretyakov Gallery—were born. It belonged to the Tretyakov merchant family from the late 18th century. Over time the Golutvin house lost its original appearance and interiors by the time the Tretyakov family lived there. Pavel and Sergey spent only the first years of their childhood in it. The Museum of Pavel and Sergey Tretyakov was conceived as a representative historic house. The atmosphere and interiors have been restored using items that do not have a direct connection to this particular house but are related to the lives and activities of the collectors. These are genuine memorial items of Pavel and Sergey Tretyakov and works from their collections. All multimedia installations were created on the basis of scholarly research and documentary sources. Not only a passion for collecting and a love of music united the brothers; they were impeccable business partners who managed to preserve mutual respect and trust until the end of their lives.
