Exhibition of the Moscow Art Theatre Museum

About exhibition

The MKhAT Museum has a permanent exhibition located on the theatre's second floor (entrance at the Small Stage). The exhibition presents the history of the theatre from its founding in 1898 until the 1943 death of Vladimir Nemirovich-Danchenko, one of its founders. Visitors will learn about the major productions staged here from the late 19th to the mid-20th century. Each is represented by the principal characters' costumes, stage models, props, set sketches, and photographs of the actors. Some items were made by the actors themselves, for example Mikhail Chekhov's chess pieces. Visitors can see the chairs of Konstantin Stanislavski and Vladimir Nemirovich-Danchenko. The set sketches for the productions were created by artists who worked at the theatre at various times. These include Pyotr Konchalovsky, Alexander Benois, Mstislav Dobuzhinsky, Boris Kustodiev, Valentin Serov, Nikolai Roerich and others. All of them are featured in the exhibition.
