Exhibition of the Sarov City Museum

About exhibition

A single admission ticket includes access to the permanent exhibition of the City Museum. On the first floor of the City Museum visitors can see the following halls: 'Origin of Life on Earth' — this hall displays the works of the famous anthropologist M.M. Gerasimov, fossilized remains of organisms, and tools used by prehistoric people. 'Diversity of the Animal World' is presented with stuffed animals, birds, and insects. The exhibition 'Archaeology of the Sarov Settlement, 12th–13th centuries' acquaints visitors with finds by archaeologists discovered on the territory of the Sarov settlement, including pottery fragments, pieces of jewelry, axes, keys and much more. The exhibition 'History of the Sarov Monastery' is richly represented by unique items found at the site of the Sarov hermitage and preserved by the townspeople: books, icons, and church utensils. Also here is a model of the Sarov Monastery, made by monks for the visit of Emperor Nicholas II in 1903. 'Peasant Life at the End of the 19th — Beginning of the 20th Century' and 'Urban Life at the End of the 19th — Beginning of the 20th Century' tell about the lives and daily routines of townspeople and peasants of the Nizhny Novgorod Governorate and the Republic of Mordovia. These halls contain pieces of furniture and household items, festive and everyday clothing of townspeople and peasants. Visitors are particularly attracted by banknotes and coins from various periods of Russian history. The second floor of the museum acquaints visitors with the city's history during the Great Patriotic War, and with the history of the creation of the object that later received city status in the hall 'Our City'. The Hall of Honor and Glory tells of the great people and outstanding scientists who lived and worked in the city. The halls contain many photographs, personal belongings of war veterans, Heroes of the Soviet Union from Sarov, and the scientists who were at the origins of creating the most powerful weapons in the world. In the 'Our City' hall you can see fragments of domestic life of citizens from the 1950s: a bed, a sewing machine, a china cabinet with porcelain elephants, and carefully preserved equipment (a KVN television set, a radiogram, a camera).
