About exhibition

Several exhibition halls on two floors of the museum tell the story of the region's ancient history — from the settlement of the area in the earliest epochs (from the Mesolithic through the Eneolithic and Bronze Age) to the Iron Age and the emergence of the first urban centers in the early Middle Ages. The collection of Cherepovets archaeologists is one of the largest in the Northwest (more than 100,000 storage units dating from 10,000 to 600 years). The rarest and truly unique items found by archaeologists show the lives and everyday activities of the ancestors, the process of formation of the local population, and its material and spiritual culture. The exhibition introduces the main archaeological monuments of the region and artifacts that allow a deep look into the past to learn where people settled on the territory of modern Cherepovets, how they lived, whom and how they hunted, and what crafts they practiced. In addition to displaying a collection of household items and tools used by people who lived several thousand years ago in the western and central parts of the Vologda region, the exhibition includes interactive modules: visitors can try to catch fish, a hare, or a bear.
