Exhibition of the A. M. Gorky and F. I. Chaliapin Museum

About exhibition

The museum's exhibition explores the lives and works of two icons of 20th-century Russian culture — A. M. Gorky and F. I. Chaliapin — whose fates intersected and were linked to Kazan, '...the most beautiful of all cities in the world,' in F. I. Chaliapin's recollection, and the 'spiritual homeland,' as defined by A. M. Gorky. The exhibition includes the sections 'Writer — Epoch — Hero. The life and creative path of A. M. Gorky' (first floor) and 'F. I. Chaliapin and Kazan' (second floor), presenting a contemporary view of the two friends' personalities in the context of Kazan's role in their destinies. It was Kazan that shaped their youthful spirits, became their first 'university of life,' predetermined their future paths, and served as the starting point in their rise from the 'depths' of life to the heights of fame and success. The museum preserves a memorial area of the bakery where the future great writer worked as a baker's assistant. The uniqueness of the exhibition lies in the display of memorabilia — items that belonged personally to A. M. Gorky and F. I. Chaliapin. The exhibition spaces also feature rarities related to the history of Tatar literature from the early 20th century to the first third of the century, works by prominent Tatar writers, and materials on the history of Kazan theaters.
