The collection of Russian Orthodox art at the Cherepovets Museum is considered one of the best in the Vologda Region. It includes handwritten and early printed books, wooden sculpture and, of course, icons. Some of them have represented Russian spiritual culture at exhibitions in Genoa, Florence, the Vatican, Japan and Cyprus. The oldest monument is a double-sided processional icon with images of Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker (14th century) and the Mother of God Hodegetria (16th century). It likely belonged to the Resurrection men's monastery of Cherepovets, which was founded in the 1360s by disciples of Saint Sergius of Radonezh — the venerables Feodosy and Afanasy Zhelezny Posokh.
