Exhibition 'The World of the Russian Village'
About exhibition
The exhibition presents one of the most significant collections in Russia of Russian folk art from the 17th to the early 20th century: through the finest and unique examples of wood carving and painting, costumes, textiles and ceramics that were used across several regions of the country (from the Russian North to the southern Volga region), it reveals the beauty and symbolism of traditional peasant objects and the depth of traditions and beliefs that shaped folk culture. The museum's display introduces authentic works of folk art: a peasant dwelling and household items, tools that accompanied a person from birth to the end of life, and explains traditional crafts, methods of decoration and the ritual significance of these objects, their connection with popular notions of the surrounding world, and with traditional festivals and rites.
