Exhibition 'N. K. Roerich Memorial Study'

About exhibition

The N. K. Roerich Memorial Study is a distinct space within the permanent exhibition of the State Museum of the Orient. It was established in 1979 thanks to a donation from American citizen Katherine Campbell-Stibbe, one of the closest associates and friends of the Roerich family. She donated a unique collection of paintings and works on paper by the Russian artist Nikolai Roerich and his son Svyatoslav Roerich, as well as decorative and applied arts from their Indian collection. This gift gave rise not only to the memorial study but also to the country’s first permanent exhibition of works by N. K. and S. N. Roerich. The memorial study recreates the atmosphere of the Roerich family home in the Indian Kulu Valley. On display are paintings, photographs, a Buddhist bronze from the family collection, the Roerichs’ personal belongings, jewelry, and rare printed editions (by the Roerichs themselves and from their home library). The exhibition traditionally consists of Roerich paintings and studies and is currently supplemented by works from the Soviet Roerich Foundation collection, including the triptych Fiat Rex ('Long live the Lord!'), the iconic painting 'Treasure of the World', Himalayan landscapes, and portraits of Nikolai and Elena Roerich. In total, the memorial study houses 31 paintings and more than 180 museum items. For detailed information about the exhibition, see the Museum of the Orient website.
