Exhibition "Memorial Room"

About exhibition

The Marko Vovchok Memorial House-Museum is the only museum in the Russian Federation and neighboring countries dedicated to the well-known Russian-Ukrainian writer; it is located in the house where Marko Vovchok spent the last two years of her life (1906–1907). The exhibition displays personal belongings and books that belonged to her, reflecting her close ties with Dmitry Pisarev, Ivan Turgenev, Taras Shevchenko, Nikolay Chernyshevsky, Alexandre Dumas, Victor Hugo and other writers. Almost the entire domestic interior has been preserved in the museum: from paintings and portraits that belonged to the writer to mid-19th-century furniture, including her favorite grand piano. The house also holds lifetime editions of her works and the writer's personal library. In 1955 a library and reading room was opened in Marko Vovchok's house. In 1976 a reconstruction project for the house-museum was developed and an updated museum exhibition created. The house was built in 1906 and is an architectural monument of the early 20th century. Marko Vovchok's grave is located on the estate grounds.
