Exhibition of the Kondrovo District Local History Museum

The local history museum is located at the entrance to the town, in its historic part on the town square, in a one-story building with a total area of 129.3 sq. m, built in 1912 by the Troitsko-Kondrovo Writing-Paper Factories of the V. Howard Company. In the Soviet period the building housed a savings bank. On 24 February 1986 the museum began operating on a voluntary basis in the renovated building of the former bank. Aleksey Ivanovich Zherebtsov — a teacher at Kondrovo Secondary School No. 1 — was appointed director. The opening of the museum was timed to coincide with the start of the 26th Congress of the CPSU. The initiative to revive the museum came from the district committee of the CPSU, the Department of Culture of the Dzerzhinsky District, and the district executive committee. Work on creating the exhibitions proceeded rapidly: people willingly donated items that had some value. A rich body of material on the Great Patriotic War was collected, documenting the feats of Heroes of the Soviet Union and full holders of the Order of Glory. The museum was fully organized by thematic sections. The museum presents: materials on the history of the region; a paleontological collection; an archaeological collection; an ethnographic exhibition; a nature section; 'The Revolutionary Period (1905–1917)'; 'The Great Patriotic War (1941–1945)'; 'The Soviet Period'; and a display on the development of the paper industry.
