About exhibition
The exhibition provides a general overview of the history of the Earth, describes the geological development of Sakhalin Island from the late Cretaceous to the present, and the modern geological processes occurring on the islands. In the "Flora and Fauna" hall visitors will learn about the region's species diversity, while the exhibition "Ancient Cultures. Indigenous Peoples" covers two topics in the history of Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands. It highlights the main stages in the development of the island region's ancient cultures, from the initial settlement of the islands in the Paleolithic to the late Middle Ages, and the cultural traditions of the indigenous peoples who lived in these territories in the 19th–20th centuries. The museum also presents the history of the discovery and development of the region, its life during the penal colony era and in the first half of the 20th century. The final hall tells the history of two wars: the Russo-Japanese War of 1904–1905 and the final stage of World War II.
