The core of the current museum collection of the Tarusa Art Gallery was formed by a collection of Russian paintings, porcelain, faience, glass, examples of Western European painting, and decorative-applied arts — gifts from the scientist-agronomist N. P. Rakitsky. V. A. Vatagin responded to the gallery's founding by donating several of his wooden sculptures, a large number of drawings, watercolours and autolithographs. A few paintings came from the State Tretyakov Gallery. There were other additions as well, mostly related to the active exhibition programme that the Tarusa Art Gallery has carried out throughout its existence. Today the permanent exhibition of the Tarusa Art Gallery, located on the building's second floor, consists of the Rakitsky Hall and the Vatagin Hall. Everyone visiting Tarusa should see them and enjoy these fine examples of visual art.
