Exhibition “Art of Chuvashia: Origins, Development, Modernity”

About exhibition

As the national art museum founded in 1939 in the capital of the Chuvash Republic, the Chuvash State Art Museum (ChGKhM) pays primary attention to Chuvash visual art. The stages of its history, formation and shifts in stylistic directions, and the search for national content and an expressive artistic form are reflected in the museum's permanent exhibition, opened on the occasion of the ChGKhM’s 70th anniversary. The exhibition consists of three sequential sections: Searches for Images (galleries on the north side); New Mythology (galleries on the east side); New Symbolism (galleries on the south side). The 'Searches for Images' section reflects the distinctive processes characteristic of Chuvash painting of the 1920s–1960s, in their inseparable connection with Russian visual art, as well as the search for a national artistic language in the works of the founders of Chuvash professional fine art. The 'New Mythology' section occupies three galleries on the east side and features works that reflect the style of socialist realism in the art of Chuvashia’s older generation of artists. The 'New Symbolism' section presents works created in the vein of the so‑called severe style.
