About exhibition
St. Isaac's Cathedral is an outstanding monument of late Russian Classicism of the mid-19th century, built to a design by the architect Auguste de Montferrand. Its solemn consecration and opening took place on May 30, 1858. The cathedral is among the largest domed structures in Europe: its height is 101.5 m, and the diameter of the exterior dome is 25.8 m. The church building is an outstanding example of the synthesis of architecture and decorative arts. The museum collection includes monumental and easel paintings, graphic art, sculpture, mosaics, decorative and applied art objects, and rare books. In the window of the cathedral's main altar is the largest altar stained-glass image in Russia, "The Risen Christ."
