The natural history collections in Cherepovets began to be assembled more than 100 years ago. In 1920, the collections of the natural science and industrial departments were transferred from the provincial museum, and on their basis the A. I. Herzen Local Nature Museum was opened. Since then the museum has changed buildings several times, merged with other departments and become independent again. Throughout this time, the museum's holdings have been enriched with taxidermy specimens, mineral and paleontological finds, insect collections and herbarium specimens. Many of these items are of great scientific value. Seven large dioramas depict ecosystems that show the diversity of the region's flora and fauna: wetlands, mixed forest, pine woods and urban environments. Each diorama features taxidermy animals — bears, lynxes, wolves, moose, birds and others. Separate exhibition spaces present the characteristics of river and forest trades — how people use natural resources.
