Exhibition of the A. I. Kurnakov Gallery

About exhibition

The gallery's halls display thematic genre works created in the mid-20th to early 21st century, reflecting the life of the country and the fates of people connected with the Oryol region. All canvases were donated by the artist during his lifetime. Most of the works show characteristic features that emerged in Soviet art in the work of the artists of the 1960s, widely known as the "severe style." The portraits depict working people, engineers, and the creative intelligentsia. The artist knew many of the subjects personally. Also on display are genre compositions in tempera and oil. A separate gallery hall is devoted to preparatory drawings and painted studies created for monumental dioramas dedicated to events of the Great Patriotic War. The master's lyrical still lifes are filled with poetic inspiration and love. Many landscapes in the exhibition reflect the literary themes of well-known Oryol writers.
