Exhibition 'Ethnoarchaeology: from Imniscaris to Mari'
About exhibition
The exhibition is dedicated to the history of a people who at different times were known as 'Imniscaris', 'Ts-r-mis', 'Cheremisa' and only in the early 20th century acquired their own name, 'Mari'. Where and when did the Mari people appear? What did they look like and what did they believe in? How did they make their living — by war, hunting, or agriculture? How were they perceived by travelers in various historical eras? Archaeologists across several generations have pieced together the people's image, fact by fact, trying to answer these complex questions. 'Archaeology with a Face' is the main leitmotif of the exhibition. On display for the first time are not only unique jewelry from the medieval period but also reconstructions of the costume ensembles of Mari women from the 6th century to the end of the 19th century. Here you can see the origins of traditions that continue to fascinate visitors to the republic today.
