You are invited to the Museum of the History of the Kostroma Region and the Guardhouse building. The museum's exhibition tells the history of Kostroma and the region from ancient times to the present. Each object will gently guide you along the path of development and change of the Kostroma Governorate, revealing the secrets, joys, and sorrows that filled the days of its inhabitants. As you move through the halls of the Guardhouse, you will take a journey through the pages of the homeland's military history and at the same time study the interiors of a historic monument built in 1823–1826. Until the early 20th century the building was used to house the main garrison guard and as a place of detention for arrested servicemen. It now houses the military-historical exposition of the Kostroma Museum-Reserve, comprising more than 1,000 exhibits. A 12th-century steel sword, a 15th-century hand cannon, a five-kilogram mail shirt and other items give an idea of what weaponry and uniforms looked like in different eras up to modern times. Here you will learn about the military feats of Kostroma's residents, see their combat awards, and read frontline letters in which personal stories combine into the shared chronicle of the Kostroma Region and the country as a whole. You can visit the museums in any order at your discretion and at any time during their opening hours with the single ticket, which is valid for one month after purchase.
