Exhibition "The Palace of Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich" and exhibitions
About exhibition
A modern reconstruction of an outstanding monument of 17th-century Russian wooden architecture. The only place in Moscow that allows one to imagine the everyday life of the tsar's court in a country summer residence. The Kolomenskoye Palace impressed contemporaries with the richness of its decoration. Watercolours, eyewitness recollections, and preserved plans and drawings have survived to this day, including those made during the dismantling of the palace initiated by Catherine the Great. This entire body of material was used to restore the building. The exterior and interior decoration reflect the aesthetics of the second half of the 17th century, with its penchant for vivid colours, polychromy, rich ornamentation and heightened emotional content. Exterior and interior elements are festively adorned with exquisite carving. The stoves are decorated with glazed tiles (izraztsy) created on the basis of those that were found in large numbers during archaeological excavations at the palace's historic site. Two hundred twenty-six craftsmen from 20 trades took part in the recreation of the interiors.
