Exhibition "House-Museum of Writer N. Ostrovsky"
About exhibition
The House-Museum of Ostrovsky is part of the Novorossiysk Historical Museum-Reserve as its literary-memorial department. In 1977 the Novorossiysk city executive committee decided to transfer to the museum the house where, in 1926–1928, the writer Nikolai Alekseevich Ostrovsky, author of the book "How the Steel Was Tempered", lived and worked. It took museum staff several years to reconstruct the house and restore its original appearance, recreating the memorial room and the inner courtyard based on preserved documents, photographs and recollections. The exhibition features a unique item — the photo album of Klavdiya Vakulenko, a feldsher of the 176th Rifle Division, which was pierced by a bullet — she had been wounded. On one of the pages are handwritten words from the novel "How the Steel Was Tempered" — the famous line: "The most precious thing a person has is life...". The exhibition also includes a collection of materials about the Kuban writer and small-landowner Georgy Sokolov. He fought on Malaya Zemlya for seven months and therefore knew frontline life firsthand. In 1949 his book "Malaya Zemlya" was published. It was very successful, went through ten editions, and the writer became a laureate of the N. Ostrovsky Prize awarded by the Krasnodar Krai Komsomol committee.
