The Central Naval Museum named after Emperor Peter the Great is one of the oldest museums in Russia and one of the largest maritime museums in Europe. The exhibition presents the history of national shipbuilding and the Russian Navy. The museum's origins date back to 1709, when Peter the Great first mentioned in a letter the 'model chamber' — a repository of samples, shipbuilding models and drawings. The museum's collection includes more than 700,000 valuable items. The museum has 19 halls of permanent exhibitions and 6 halls for temporary exhibitions. Visitors can see models of sailing and ironclad ships, aviation and military equipment, paintings by I. K. Aivazovsky, A. P. Bogolyubov, A. K. Beggrov and N. N. Gritsenko, Peter I's boat, Catherine the Great's naval throne, S. K. Dzhevetsky's submarine and the I-16 fighter. The youngest guests will find Captain Vrungel's 'ship', where they can feel like real sailors.
