Gromovaya Tower Exhibition

About exhibition

Visiting the Gromovaya Tower of the Smolensk Fortress Museum involves a self-guided exploration of the museum space. In the 17th century, the struggle for control of Smolensk became a key episode of the Russo-Polish wars. For the exhibition, museum staff prepared more than 10 maps and diagrams reflecting various phases of the historical events. On the tower's tiers visitors can see a large-scale model of the fortress, original pieces of weaponry and household items from the 16th–17th centuries, as well as reconstructions of weapons and historical military uniforms of the Russian and Polish armies. The fourth tier among the battlements impresses with its spacious area beneath the fortress canopy. The upper fighting passage — a covered gallery crowning a section of the fortress wall — is once again open to visitors.
