Exhibition "Arkhangelsk — the First Gateway to the Russian State"

About exhibition

The exhibition's narrative centers on the internal life of the Arkhangelsk port, the history of the famous fair, the vicissitudes of foreign merchants' stays in the Pomor region, Peter I's first journeys to Arkhangelsk, his sea outings and adventures, the laying of the shipyard and the construction of the first ships. The central exhibit of the display is the Petrovsky Cross, carved by Peter himself in memory of a miraculous rescue during a storm in the White Sea. The architectural and artistic design of the hall relies on modern multimedia technologies that help create a historical and cultural image of the era through a complex of sound and visual effects. The sound of the river's waves and the voices of foreign merchants recreate the spirit of a 17th-century ship quay, filling the exhibition space with everyday details and a distinctive Arkhangelsk local color.
