About exhibition
Exhibitions of the V. A. Tropinin Museum and artists of his time are dedicated to the culture of the 18th through the mid-19th centuries. The intimate rooms preserve the atmosphere of an old urban house in Zamoskvorechye. The museum was established in 1969 based on a collection donated to the city by the legendary F. E. Vishnevsky. The art holdings comprise over 3,000 works of Russian and Western European painting and graphics, objects of decorative and applied art, and furniture. The jewel of the collection is the assembly of works by the famous Moscow portraitist V. A. Tropinin (1780-1857). In his vast creative legacy lies nearly the entire history and culture of the first half of the 19th century. Portraits of prominent contemporaries—representatives of artistic circles, the aristocracy, high-ranking statesmen, and military figures—are literally 'all of Moscow,' including great nobles, wealthy merchants, coachmen, and street vendors. In the gallery of V. A. Tropinin's works one finds not only the faces of Moscow in the first half of the 19th century but also the aesthetics of its daily life, era, tastes, and traditions. The museum's exhibitions preserve and convey this atmosphere.
