Tatiana Mavrina. Petrovsky Monastery, 1943
Tatiana Mavrina made this sheet in Moscow in 1943, during the war years. People are walking down a street: in the foreground are two servicemen in uniform, women in dark coats and children. Behind them rise a church with green domes and a red building topped with a green dome, with the green of trees nearby. The sheet is titled "Petrovsky Monastery".
Tatiana Mavrina (1900–1996) was a painter, graphic artist and illustrator. During the war she stayed in Moscow and drew a great deal; later her memoirs, diary notes, landscapes and drawings from the war years made up the book "Moscow. Forty Forties". In 1976 Mavrina received the Hans Christian Andersen Award for her contribution to the illustration of children's books.
The work is executed on toned paper in gouache, watercolour and white, ink and pen. In the lower left corner there is a handwritten inscription that is illegible in the photograph.
