Konstantin Korovin's Poster "Give to the Victims of War!"

This charity poster of 1914, the first year of the First World War, called for donations to help those who had suffered from the war. It was designed by Konstantin Korovin, one of the leaders of Russian Impressionism, and issued on behalf of the All-Russian Zemstvo Union for the Relief of the Sick and Wounded.

The union was founded in Moscow in the summer of 1914 at a congress of representatives of the provincial zemstvos and was headed by Prince Georgy Lvov. It equipped hospitals and hospital trains, supplied medicines and linen, and later helped refugees. Its funds came from government subsidies, contributions from local organisations and donations.

From 1910 to 1922 Korovin (1861–1939) was the chief designer and artist of the Moscow theatres, and during the war he worked as a camouflage consultant on the staff of the Russian army. The poster was printed in Moscow in chromolithography by the A. A. Levenson Partnership.
