Leonid Pasternak. Poster "Help for the Victims of War", 1914

This charity poster by Leonid Pasternak was printed in Moscow in 1914, in the first months of the First World War. The artist depicted a wounded soldier: his head is bandaged, with a red stain showing through the bandage; he leans against a wall, his head resting on his arm, and holds a rifle with a bayonet. On the right, in large letters, is the inscription "Na pomoshch zhertvam voiny" ("Help for the Victims of War"), and below it the dates 20 and 21 August and the word "Moscow". In the corner are the artist's signature and the figures "14".

Leonid Pasternak (1862–1945) was a painter and graphic artist and the father of the poet Boris Pasternak; from 1894 he taught at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. According to the Museum of Moscow's online collection, the poster was printed by the A. A. Levenson Rapid Printing Company. The technique is lithography on paper.
